Parkinson's Quilt Project

The Parkinson's Quilt Project began in a conversation with my brother Mark while I was on the Cape helping to care for my mother in her last days.

Mark saw a small ad from the Alzheimer's Association looking for donations of small quilts for people with this awful disease. Hey Son, Mark said, you could do this for people with Parkinson's.

Both of our parents died of complications from Parkinson's disease so this seemed like a natural.

In December, I discovered the Parkinson's Center at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. The director loved my idea and now I'm a guest speaker at their April symposium.

I'm developing a series of quilt designs meant to be versatile, relatively easy to make, and eye-popping. This photograph is of the center of the first comfort quilt.

All of the quilts for this project are no bigger than 36 x 60 inches, a size called a lap quilt. It's easy to move around, nap with, put over your shoulders like a stole or over your lap. It is easily moved by even the most frail person.
